My name is Di, and I have had the immense pleasure of studying the art of Herbalism under the guidance of many knowledgeable and passionate teachers. As I stand here deep in the forest leaning against my walking stick, I gaze down the winding trail behind me with the assurance that every incredible journey begins with a single, courageous step.
In March of 2016, I embarked on a transformative journey into the world of herbal studies by enrolling in the esteemed School of Traditional Western Herbalism, located in the vibrant city of Portland, Oregon. This institution, known for its comprehensive approach to herbal education, provided a rich curriculum that delved deep into the principles and practices of traditional herbalism. In 2017, the school underwent a significant rebranding and changed its name to Vital Ways, reflecting its commitment to promoting holistic health and well-being through the use of herbal medicine.
During my time at the school, I immersed myself in a wide range of subjects that encompassed not only the identification and use of various herbs but also the historical contexts and cultural significance of herbal practices. The curriculum was designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling us to understand the intricate relationships between plants and human health. Classes included extensive studies on botany, pharmacognosy, and the art of formulating herbal remedies, alongside hands-on workshops that allowed us to engage directly with the plants we were learning about.
As I progressed through the program, which extended to February 25th, 2019, I had the opportunity to connect with experienced herbalists and fellow students who shared my passion for natural healing. The collaborative environment fostered a sense of community and encouraged deep discussions about the various applications of herbal medicine. I was particularly drawn to the ways in which different cultures have utilized plants for healing over centuries, and I found myself exploring the rich tapestry of herbal traditions from around the world.
Throughout my studies, I developed a profound appreciation for the power of Nature and the importance of sustainable practices in herbalism. This education not only equipped me with the knowledge to create effective herbal remedies but also instilled in me a sense of responsibility to honor the earth and its resources. It would be a few years later after I completed the program, I felt empowered and inspired to share my newfound knowledge with others, advocating for the benefits of herbal medicine in promoting health and wellness in our communities.
What I didn’t expect was that this guidance would evolve into a profound journey of the soul, one that would lead me through the intricate pathways of spiritual transformation. As I delved deeper into this exploration, I began to experience an awakening that transcended mere understanding. I discovered that communicating with the plants was not solely about vocalization or spoken words; it was a rich tapestry of interactions that involved listening, observing, and feeling the subtle energies that surrounded these remarkable beings.
Through dedicated practice and an open heart, I embarked on a quest to learn the intricate language of plants, which is woven from the threads of their movements, scents, and even the vibrations they emit. I found that plants have their own unique ways of expressing their needs, emotions, and experiences, and as I tuned into these signals, I felt a profound connection forming between us. Each rustle of leaves and every gentle sway of a stem seemed to convey messages that were both ancient and wise, revealing the deep-rooted knowledge they possess about the world and the ecosystems they inhabit. As I immersed myself in this newfound understanding, I began to realize that the plants were not just passive entities in my environment; they were vibrant, sentient beings with whom I could engage in a meaningful dialogue.
In this space of mutual respect and recognition, I felt embraced and accepted among them. They welcomed me into their realm, allowing me to witness their lives, the symbiotic relationships they formed with other organisms, and the delicate balance they maintained within their ecosystems. This journey transformed my perspective on life and interconnectedness, as I came to appreciate the intricate web of existence that binds all living things together. I learned to honor the wisdom of the plants and to recognize the lessons they had to offer, fostering a sense of gratitude and reverence for the natural world. This spiritual transformation not only enriched my understanding of plants but also deepened my connection to my own spirit, illuminating the path toward a more harmonious existence with all forms of life.
At the start of the Covid pandemic, when the world came to a standstill and many aspects of daily life were disrupted, I found myself with an unexpected opportunity to focus on personal growth and education. Recognizing the unique situation presented by the lockdown, I made the conscious decision to take advantage of this downtime to further my knowledge and skills by enrolling in the Herbal Practitioner course offered by Wild Rose College. This decision was not made lightly; I had a deep-seated interest in herbal medicine and natural healing practices, which I felt could be beneficial not only for my own well-being but also for the community around me.
The course itself was incredibly rigorous and demanding, requiring a significant commitment of time and energy. Over the span of three years, I immersed myself in a wide array of subjects related to herbalism, including botany, pharmacognosy, and the practical applications of various herbs in healing. Each module was designed to challenge my understanding and push the boundaries of my knowledge, which often meant late nights spent poring over textbooks, conducting research, and engaging in hands-on practice with the plants themselves. The intensity of the program was both exhilarating and daunting, as I navigated through complex concepts and learned to identify and utilize a multitude of herbs effectively.
Throughout this educational journey, I also had the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who shared my passion for herbal medicine. The community aspect of the course was invaluable, as we exchanged ideas, experiences, and insights that enriched our learning. I participated in online discussions, attended virtual workshops, and even engaged in collaborative projects that deepened my understanding of herbal practices and their historical significance. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of camaraderie and support, which was especially important during the isolating times of the pandemic.
By the time I completed the Herbal Practitioner course, I had not only gained a wealth of knowledge but also developed a profound respect for the healing properties of Nature.
